About the Levels Courses

The courses focus on ‘learning by doing’, helping teachers share their music through practical music making and by creating enjoyable experiences for the students. They are based on the principles developed by Carl Orff, the composer and music educator who lived and worked in Europe from 1895 to 1982.

Participants in these courses will be exposed to a stimulating and graded repertoire of music and dance pieces. They will be encouraged to develop their confidence and skills in sharing with students of all ages and stages of development.

Orff Schulwerk offers a holistic approach to music education. It integrates singing, speech activities, movement, folk dance and the playing of percussion instruments to encourage active music making.

It can be applied to all educational levels and in community music. From the earliest ages singing and saying nursery rhymes and speech verses are combined with sound gestures or body percussion (clapping, stamping, finger clicking etc).

These practical activities lay the foundations for broad musical development. They also lend themselves to involvement with the range of Orff instruments from simple non-tuned percussion (eg tambourines) to recorders, xylophones and glockenspiels.

The ‘Orff’ approach to music education is continuing to grow and adapt to present day needs and circumstances and is now being taught throughout the world.

Levels 1 & 2 will be run simultaneously. ie participants can only complete ONE level at a time. To enrol in the Level 2 course, you MUST have successfully completed Level 1 and hold a Level 1 Certificate of Accreditation from an Orff society.

Each day runs from 8.45am to 5.45pm. FULL Attendance each day is required to attain accreditation.

The Carolyn Royal VOSA Orff Levels Scholarship 2018

Carolyn Royal was a highly valued member of our Australian Orff family, widely known for her passion and enthusiasm to make music accessible to all. She was a dedicated and active member of the VOSA committee for over 25 years and the ANCOS national Orff committee for many years. She contributed in so many ways by using her creative flair to design brochures, banners and decorations, taking care of the ANCOS archives, catering for events as well as being an outstanding teacher and mentor. Her positive zest for life, family, friends and all of those she worked with was infectious. The Carolyn Royal Orff levels scholarship celebrates Carolyn’s desire to bring music into all of our lives with much cheer and joy in our hearts.

The Carolyn Royal Orff levels scholarship is intended to enable general class teachers and music educators from Victoria to attend an Orff level course (1-2) in Victoria.
