“…the process of learning should be fun at all levels, at all times, for everyone” Andre van de Plas

André van de Plas is a professional folkdance teacher and a trained primary school teacher from the Netherlands.

Over the past three decades he has taught international dances and made many choreographies in the Netherlands as well as abroad. He works with different age groups, all levels from beginners to highly advanced.

Andre specialises in dances from Romania and Hungary as well as in children’s dances, which have been particularly useful in his job as primary school teacher.

For many years Andre was the artistic director of the Phoenix Folkdance Ensemble in Apeldoorn and he has set up school projects for the highly acclaimed professional International Dance Theatre in Amsterdam. Outside the Netherlands he has taught in many European countries, Hong Kong, Taiwan , Australia and New Zealand. He has visited Australia every year since 1986, each time taking a new repertoire. He has held workshops for school and music teachers, recreational folkdance groups and has been guest teacher at many residential workshop weekends.

Andre has produced an extensive range of folkdance resource sets (booklet and CD) and for this Workshop he will be teaching from his ‘orange’ Program featuring some of his best all time dances and also some dances he has never before taught in Melbourne.

Andre believes that the process of learning should be fun at all levels, at all times, for everyone. As such, his focus is not so much on how to perfect certain steps, but rather to dance to the music and relate to the cultural and social aspects of the dance.

Andre is a past keynote presenter at VOSA’s ECCPA conference and this year we are lucky enough to have Andre present a workshop for teachers or anyone interested in learning some dances for young children and some tips with which to help you teach these dances.
